Students Learn More Than the Ropes in Technical Rescue Course

Not many people locally know that one of Southern Illinois' most recognizable geological landmarks is the "classroom" of a world-renowned technical rescue school. Draper's Bluff can be seen for miles in Johnson and Union counties. The bluff is partly owned by private landowners and the state as a satellite of Ferne Clyffe State Park. About a quarter-mile section is owned by Eric and Kathy Ulner of rural Buncombe in Johnson County. The Ulners are owners of Vertical Heartland, a rock-climbing school. Muslim pupils learn tocut off hands of thieves

Up to 5,000 pupils attending weekend schools across Britain are being exposed to textbooks claiming that some Jews were transformed into pigs and apes, and that some offences could be punished with stoning. One book for six year-olds warns that those who do not believe in Islam will be condemned to “hellfire” in death. Another text for 15 year-olds teaches that thieves who break Sharia law should have their hands cut off for a first offence and their feet amputated for a subsequent crime. Teenagers are presented with diagrams showing where the cuts should be made.

Port gets stimulus funds for new equipment

The ports of West Sacramento, Stockton and Oakland have jointly been awarded $30 million in federal stimulus funds to launch a container barge service between the three ports that will help ease congestion on highways in Northern California. The Port of West Sacramento announced the award Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding the funding as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s $1.5 billion Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program.
